Wrongly Accused Person Awarded Charitable Status

We are very pleased to announce that the Wrongly Accused Person organisation has been awarded charity status after being assessed by the OSCR (Office of the Scottish Charity Register). This will pave the way for us to provide more significant support to those suffering injustice as a result of being wrongly accused/convicted.

The Wrongly Accused Person website was launched on the 8th April 2009 with a very clear purpose: to support the wrongly accused/convicted and their families. It’s presence was quickly established on the internet and has over the past 18 months highlighted many alleged miscarriages of justice, along with the causes of them.

Highlighting the extent of the problem faced by innocent people at the hands of the justice system, so as to raise awareness among members of the public with no experience of it, has always been an important objective.  However helping the wrongly accused/convicted and their families more directly requires the provision of more practical assistance. Being a registered charity will help secure the substantial funding needed to meet those needs, in an ongoing and sustainable way.

The aims and objectives of Wrongly Accused Person  are covered in the organisations constitution – http://www.wronglyaccusedperson.org.uk/about/constitution/ These require considerable planning and will be put in place as the organisation develops as and when funding and volunteer training make it possible.

Our first goal is to put in place funding for scientific testing and/or expert opinions capable of demonstrating wrongful convictions, prioritising those who are incarcerated in an effort to expedite recognition that a miscarriage of justice has occurred. Recruiting volunteers will also be a primary focus in the next stage of development.

We hope to be able to work closely with other organisations to ensure that there is no duplication of efforts, and that all available resources are used to their fullest potential.

At this important juncture in the development of the Wrongly Accused Person organisation, we would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to, and supported, the growth of the organisation so far, and look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.

Congratulations Billy and Sandra. It’s great to see all the hard work you both put in being recognised and supported. Wrongly accused people can never have too much support. The additional support from yourselves provides reassurance, and that bit more hope, to those who are serving a sentence for a crime they did not commit. Keep up the good work.

I can think of nothing better. I have not known either of your for very long but I can see the dedication you both have for what you do. To show belief in people who need to know there are people who believe in true justice is a great morale booster when you are serving a prison sentence for a crime you did not commit. Well done.
