About Wrongly Accused Person
The site, what we do and what we are
aiming for.
It is now more than 4 months since the site was launched but already we have achieved much more than you would normally expect in that timescale. There are many more things we would like to integrate into what is available here directly but first let’s take a moment to go over what is available here and now. Firstly, we have created a readily available point of contact not only with ourselves but with other people who are affected by situations wrongly accused/convicted people and their families. This is done via our forum pages where anyone is free to join and participate in discussions and share their experiences, which puts people in contact with others who have either been through it previously or who are also going through it now. While in some ways this may seem trivial, for those who have made use of the forum it has proved anything but and has become something of a social group where distance is not an issue. When people get caught up in a wrongful accusation or conviction a common feeling is that no-one understands, of isolation and hence despair, our discussion pages show that this need not be the case and while every experience is different there are always many similarities. It would be wrong to think we could address each and every possible issue, many require more tailor maid support or advice. While obviously we do our best to provide it here, at the moment that simply isn’t possible since to do so we need volunteers with knowledge and experience in all areas. This is very much something we hope to achieve in future and anyone willing to give a little of their spare time to help us provide it is more than welcome to join our team. To do so simply e-mail admin@wronglyaccusedperson.org.uk and we’ll be happy to hear from you and discuss what you can do for those who need you and how we can introduce facilities through which you can achieve it. In the meantime we are compiling a list of external sources of advice covering a wide range of issues which visitors to the site may find helpful. Remember these are not limited to the act or process of being wrongly accused or convicted but other areas such as financial advice etc. Many things can be thrown into disarray when you or someone you depend on is imprisoned and no longer there do deal with things they normally would take care of and the best way to make sure things don’t get in a mess is to seek appropriate advice leaving you more at ease to concentrate on what will undoubtedly be at the forefront of your minds. We have also been contacted regarding many cases and have been able to suggest issues which have not previously been considered. It would be inappropriate to disclose which cases these are, or details of what has been submitted as a result of our involvement since these cases are currently in various legal processes so should not be discussed in any other way than what is already public knowledge. Client confidentiality also prevents these matters from being discussed. We do however have reason to believe our input has had a positive effect in many ways. This is an area we are currently developing further so that our efforts can be more extensive; to build on this we are on related courses which will enable us to do more. Ultimately we do have a ‘master plan’ but it is quite unique so it would be unwise to detail exactly what that is though it will certainly be a very useful defence tool. The necessary courses are quite expensive so these will need to be done over a period of time though we would like to complete them at the earliest possible opportunity. Aside from the support provided through our forum pages, we have also been more directly available to those who have requested it. For these people it is largely the fact that they are in touch with someone with experience who therefore understands what they are feeling and why they feel it. The main problem we have encountered in this regard is that these calls are important at the moment they are made, by nature they are seldom short nor can they be, someone in need of such should not be under any time pressure. Volunteers who could assist in this area would be greatly appreciated so if you have any counselling experience or experience in the field of false accusations or wrongful convictions and would like to help, please do e-mail and let us know. This does however present certain issues regarding contact details which can only realistically be addressed by the introduction of a fully manned telephone service to direct callers to the appropriate areas depending on the nature of their call. At the moment site funding is the limiting factor in this respect though we are working hard to resolve this issue. We do now provide a facility whereby we can host campaign sites for those we believe are wrongly convicted which we have termed “caseblogs”. This type of websites are not new but for friends and families they can be particularly hard to keep up with, initially fairing well but overtime can become overwhelming leaving them less beneficial as they are to begin with. Since this is provided through us, we can liaise with the wrongly convicted person through the post and enable their caseblog to be as much as possible their own work. All services are provided freely, we believe that no-one who finds themselves in this position should be charged a fee no matter how small for any kind of support they require. Therefore we can only continue through funds raised by donations and onsite advertising etc. This is however quite restrictive so we are planning several fund raising events to enable us to do more than finances currently allow. These will all be themed in some way and from time to time anyone interested in helping out with this will be able to participate in some way. Further details will be provided when they are available. Lastly, though there are bound to be more additions over time, we aim to seek changes in various parts of the justice system which can be responsible for creating wrongly accused people or indeed lead to their wrongful convictions. While many believe the justice system is thorough and robust, though the main principles of it are fundamentally sound, there are areas which either through abuse of process, misconduct etc. do contribute to miscarriages of justice. Nothing is ever perfect, things can always be better and we will do our utmost to bring about any changes which would improve the way things presently are.
