Walk Free Campaign

Yes, that's right. Ontop of everything else today (21/09/09) marks the launch of the 'walk free' campaign.

Firstly, please let me explain that you can expect this page to be updated quite a bit between now and the actual walk for many reasons.

This is something I have been intending to do for a while but until now have not spoken publicly about, partly because I wanted to be a little more certain of times and routes. However, the more it has been discussed and thought about, the more it has become apparent that neither can be set in stone until nearer the time as I'm sure you will come to realise as you read on.

Basically, I will be walking from where I live in Shetland, through Orkney and down the entire UK to the south of England. Nothing out of the ordinary there, people do it all the time for various causes, some even take their dogs for the walk.

So, what makes this different? Well a few things actually but since you have found your way to this site you will probably have at the very least a little inkling. If we start with the not so obvious, as things stand at the moment I am doing a Law course, a psychology course and am about to begin a forensics course, so my training for the walk must be done at the same time.

Then, my route may, in fact is almost certain, not to be the shortest possible. The reason for this is quite simply part and parcel of the reason for doing so in the first place. Along the way, I will be stopping off at various locations, to meet with the families of those who are maintaining innocence and from there to the place of their loved ones detention (family members and friends are free to come along too). Although their is a number of cases to which this applies obviously we are not aware of them all, to be included you should apply to walk-free@wronglyaccusedperson.org.uk, we will send you further details on request. It is worth noting at this point that you do not need to be the wrongly convicted person or a family member to suggest a worthy case, you could for example simply be a concerned friend with details of a campaign address or other means of contact with the relevant persons.

The route therefore will undoubtedly be far from a straight line, but to complicate matters further, where possible I intend to visit the wrongly convicted person themselves. This means that not only does the route need to be adjusted to encompass the families which are often forgotten, but also the routes from each to any given place of detention. That in itself is quite daunting, however it also means for me facing entry to not just to one prison, but many, all be it from a different perspective. The usual red tape etc aside it is an experience I would prefer to avoid though it is important for those concerned that I do.

Further to the above, another priority is to highlight not only the cases but the reasons behind them. For the vast majority of the British public, there is without meaning any disrespect a state of ignorance as to what can and does occur in the name of justice. Many of these things are neither rare or excusable but never the less they happen routinely outwith the knowledge of those with no reason to be aware, any of which could be deciding the fate of an accused person as part of a jury. I don't believe or accept for one moment that these issues cannot be resolved, but to do so requires sanctions to be imposed on those responsible which simply will not happen unless society as a whole are aware of the problem. It is worth noting that each of the things which can cause a miscarriage of justice can equally lead to a guilty person escaping the punishment they deserve. I personally don't care what the late Lord Denning said, in a justice system which is supposed to operate in the public's interests neither outcome is acceptable.

Details on what you can do to support "Walk Free", will be released in due course, though I expect several pairs of shoes may be required! (size 11)
